Some Weird Electrical Stuff

So yesterday a bunch of my home electrics started shall we say, underperforming. Most of my lights are on remote via X10 equipment. It’s old and not as elegant as some automation solutions are, but it is what I HAVE. I’ve been using this stuff for years. It is still relatively cheap (& unsophisticated!) compared to other home automation solutions. Some of the lamp modules are close to as old as The Offspring. At any rate, I can turn most of the table lamps on or off and brighten or dim the lights too. The modules go between the mains and the appliance to be controlled and use your house wiring to communicate with remote switches that control them. X10 is explained at the link above.

So yesterday all my modules were either not working at all or working part time. It was very erratic.  Quite frustrating trying to troubleshoot, because one thing would work for a bit and then not at all. I suspect an electrical surge to be the culprit. Or a surges counterpart. I only found this out as I was turning everything off so I could take a bike ride. That baffled me for a bit. I finally said the hell with it and left anyway.

I rode the bike till the battery died on it. There was still a bit of juice, but not enough to use the power assist to get up the floors in the garage.

I was gone a couple of hours, I think, and my legs were complaining once I got off. My home electrics weirded out for another couple of hours and then BINK! everything was seemingly back to normal. I don’t think it had anything to do with what I was doing.

And another strange thing… I plugged my bike battery in to charge. Thing had been giving me problems. And I don’t know if it was the battery or the damned power brick. It had sounded like a clock ticking all the while it was charging and it flipped from charge to full while tick tocking. Guess I drained the battery pretty well because the thing was silent and charged the battery uninterrupted for an entire cycle. So it is working now too.

Strange electrical energy permeates La Casita de TexasT’s. Wooooooooooo.
