Great Googly Moogly

Had my productivity blown out of the water this morning when I couldn’t get either my 4th gen iPod Touch or my damned iPhone 4 to connect to my WiFi. This kind of crap makes me frickin’ C R A Z Y!

I have 2 Apple TV’s, a 1st gen iPad, an iPad 3, a 2d gen iPod touch, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 - 7, 2 Macs and a Windows PC that all connect to my network just fine.

I know that sounds like a lot of different stuff, but there’s a method to my madness.

Of course that 2d gen iPod, I had to find and charge a bit just to test it. But it connected.

Nothing I did would make those 2 latest pieces of apple tech connect.

I made them both forget the network. And re-added it to both.
I did soft resets to both (numerous times)
Jump started my cable modem (once) Didn’t think this could be the problem as the wifi is thru a router.
Unplugged my (Apple) Airport Extreme (router) several times.
Cussed a lot!!! *grins*

Nothing seemed to work. Did several Internet searches and they all suggested the same things I had already done. WTF!

I don't have time for this, I have things to do, I thought. But once focused on a problem (NOT an “issue”) I can have a hard time letting go of it…

Tenacious much? I seem to have been given a double dip of THAT!

So I poured through the search result again. And (re)found a suggestion that I figured was just too damned obscure to be the problem. And just too damned simple of a solution. It seemed to be a D-Link or Link-Sys fix. At the end of my rope, I decided to give it a try What the hell, right?

Started Airport Utility. Clicked the Network Tab. Then checked (or ticked) the box for ‘Enable Access Control’. Then clicked the “update” button. I then unchecked the box (never even left that screen) and clicked “update” again.

These are a bit different than the steps outlined in the posting, but the steps all do the same thing.Youtube vid here.

And both my stupid bits of tech connected. Right away. Even.

Jeebus! I had just about blistered the paint on the walls in here at La Casita with my vociferous cursing! So simple, so elegant. And it just plumb evaded me.

I haven’t been able to make AirPlay work right for quite some time on any of my equipment. I can get to the shared library just fine. But while iTunes could see my various speakers it would not (or could not) connect to ANY of them.

Downloaded a copy of AirFoil 4 from Rogue Amoeba, and all is wonderful once again.

Been listening to Anomymous 4 today. Lovely. Ancient music. Funny story about this:

Was riding up (or down. Can’t really remember) in the elevator at work listening to ‘A Mass for the End of Time’ on my iPod. It was pretty loud. A couple of people got on the elevator (I knew them) and started wondering just what it was I was listening to.

I pulled a earphone out and said, “Just a little ancient music.”

“oh yeah Tom. Sure. Maybe some ancient Rock?” Seemed to be the general concensus amongst my fellow riders. I did (still do) cultivate a taste for loud Rock and Roll as well. You know, made loud to be played loud! Rock on!

“No. Really ancient music,” was my retort.

“Sure. From the 50’s!”

I pulled the headphone from the jack on my player and Anonymous 4 filled the confined space.

“Yeah, from the 50’s. The 1550’s, I think.” Then DING! the doors opened and I left my traveling companions on the elevator with their mouths hanging agape.

I guess they didn't realize just how deep my enjoyment of music went. I had pretty long hair back then and a kind of a hard reputation. But, you know, books should never be judged by the outer jacket!
