Whoa there, Pilgrim!

Okay. So I just got a random text from someone named "Jenn" who said she got my number from facebook. I thought it was set to "private".

Kind of scary. So I went looking for a solution. And there is one, but it is buried deeper in the security settings. Check out this article:
http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2012/10/10/phone-number-privacy-facebook/

Now get out there and fix it.

So here's the deal. Almost anyone can look you up via phone number in facebook. I took my number OUT. I don't care if I cannot update or whatever from the phone. Almost ready to deactivate my account.

ETA: Turns out 'Jenn' is some sort of webcam girl. Sure she is. She "thinks she lives close to me. If I was up for something fun tonight" Sent me a link to her page. "keeps her safe, minors out, blah, blah, yada yada."

Yeah, I don't give a rat's ass. Forget my flippin' number okay? Shit weird-ed me OUT.

My cell phone synced with my FB account and automatically loaded my phone with all my FB friends' phone numbers. That was a while ago though.

Geez, way to go Facebook, with setting everyone's privacy by default to nonexistent. Thanks for posting this - I just fixed mine.

Facebook hookers. They tend to get their accounts shut down fairly fast but it's annoying as hell to have random people texting.

I suppose they do and it is a bit disconcerting.

Hi, you don't know me but...

Did you lock out your email as well? I had some 24 year old trying to do sexy chat with me on gmail.

Scary indeed! Sheesh! That would have sent me into fits of paranoia.

I'm so glad you posted this. I took my number out too. I don't care if they badger me for validation or verification or whatever, I will not give it out again. If they keep bugging me for a phone number I'll delete my Facebook account.

:(

Dunno. It synced all 215 Fb contacts to my phone (which I hate). I might just delete the blinking number..

That's what I ended up doing. And I can still do FB stuff from my phone.

I've been UBER careful to not have my mobile number or address anywhere on Facebook - don't trust them at all!
